Genie is an Overhead Door Corporation brand that builds screw, chain and belt drive openers, with Intellicode rolling-code remotes and, on newer units, the Aladdin Connect app. The usual Genie repairs are a worn carriage, a noisy screw drive, a failed circuit board, and safety sensors out of line. Circuit boards are ordered by model once we confirm the fault.
What we see on these
- Older screw drives that groan or chatter because the grease has dried out, and newer ones noisy from a worn carriage or screw
- Worn carriages that slip on the screw or the belt, leaving the door stopped partway
- Circuit boards that failed after a surge, so nothing responds to the remote or the wall button
- Safety sensors out of line, so the door reverses or will not close at all
- Intellicode remotes and keypads to replace or pair, and Aladdin Connect to set up on newer units
Where we see Genie openers in San Diego
Genie is one of the major opener brands in the United States, so it turns up in every kind of San Diego garage. We find Genie screw drives on older homes in El Cajon, Bonita and Rancho Bernardo where the original opener was swapped out years ago, and belt-drive models in newer tracts in San Marcos.
Genie and Overhead Door are sister brands, so a home with an Overhead Door garage door may well have a Genie opener above it, and the remotes work the same way.
Inland, a garage that bakes through August is hard on the grease in older screw drives. Near the coast, salt air goes after the screw and the rail hardware instead.
How to identify a Genie
The Genie name is usually on the light cover or the front of the motor head, with the model label on the side or back. Genie remotes carry the Genie logo.
Look at the rail. A long threaded steel rod running down the middle is a screw drive, a common Genie layout. A chain is a chain drive, and a flat reinforced belt is a belt drive. The part that rides the rail and holds the door arm is called the carriage on a Genie, where other brands say trolley.
Genie openers pair with Intellicode rolling-code remotes through a program or learn button on the motor head. They do not use the Security+ system of the Chamberlain family, so a LiftMaster remote will not work. The oldest Genie units use fixed-code remotes set with a row of small switches inside.

What wears out on a Genie
Screw drive noise. On older screw drives the grease along the screw dries out or fills with grit, and the opener groans, chatters and wears the carriage faster. Newer Genie screw drives ship pre-lubricated, so a noisy one usually points to a worn carriage or screw. See grinding, squeaking or rattling.
Carriage. The carriage rides the screw or the belt. Once it wears, it slips, so the opener runs and the door stops partway or does not move at all.
Circuit board. Surges and age take out boards. No lights and no response, with power confirmed at the outlet, usually points here.
Sensors. Photo eyes out of line or with a damaged wire keep the door from closing. See will not close or reverses.
A Genie, like any opener, only guides a balanced door. If a spring is broken, stop using the opener and keep everyone clear of the door.
Genie parts and what we carry
Genie parts do not cross over to the Chamberlain family, so we keep them separate on the truck: carriages for screw, chain and belt drives, grease for older screw drives, Genie safety sensors, Intellicode remotes and wireless keypads.
Because Overhead Door openers use Genie-type remotes, the same Intellicode remotes cover most of those units as well.
Circuit boards are ordered by model after we confirm the fault, not before. Remotes for the oldest fixed-code units are harder to find, which is part of the case for replacing those openers rather than chasing parts.
On newer units with Aladdin Connect, we can check the app connection while we are there and make sure the door still stops and reverses on the sensors.
Repair or replace a Genie
Repair a Genie when the fault is a carriage, a dry screw on an older unit, the sensors, a remote or the settings. A screw drive with a new carriage, re-greased if it is an older model, runs smoothly again for a modest cost.
Lean toward replacement when:
- the circuit board has failed on an older unit,
- the screw itself is worn or bent,
- the opener uses fixed-code remotes with switches, which anyone who sets a remote to the same pattern can copy,
- you want battery backup, which California requires on new openers sold or installed since July 1, 2019.
Our repair or replace guide goes through the decision, and opener installation covers the swap.
Genie repair across San Diego
We service Genie openers from Encinitas on the coast to Lakeside in East County. Near the ocean the screw and carriage pick up rust; inland, heat bakes the grease on older screw drives.
Either way the visit runs the same: read any powerhead LED codes, disconnect the opener and check the door balance by hand, check the screw, chain or belt and the carriage, replace the worn part, set the travel limits and force, and test the safety reverse.
Questions about pairing a new remote, a keypad or a car button are answered on our remotes and keypads page.
We are an independent repair company, not affiliated with Genie or any other garage door or opener manufacturer. Brand names on this site describe the equipment we work on, nothing more.
Genie: common questions
Why is my Genie screw-drive opener so loud?
On an older unit, usually the grease on the screw has dried out or collected grit, so the carriage grinds along it. Newer Genie screw drives ship pre-lubricated, so noise there usually means a worn carriage or screw. Loose rail hardware and worn rollers on the door add to it. A new carriage, plus cleaning and re-greasing on older units, quiets most noisy screw drives.
What is Intellicode on a Genie opener?
Intellicode is the rolling-code system Genie uses for its remotes and keypads. Each press sends a new code, so the signal cannot simply be recorded and replayed. Intellicode remotes pair with Genie openers and, in most cases, with Overhead Door openers too. They do not work with LiftMaster, Chamberlain or Craftsman units, which use a different system.
Does my Genie opener work with an app?
Newer Genie openers work with Aladdin Connect, the Genie app for opening, closing and checking the door from a phone. Whether a given unit supports it depends on the model, so read the label on the motor head or send us a photo of it. An older Genie without app support can be replaced with one that has it.
How do I program a Genie garage door remote?
Find the program button on the motor head: a round LEARN CODE button with a red light on 1995 to 2011 units, or a square PRGM button on newer ones. Put the opener into program mode, then press the remote button slowly as Genie's instructions describe until the opener responds, and test it with the door path clear. Only Intellicode-type remotes pair. Our remote programming guide has the full steps.
Is Genie the same company as Overhead Door?
Genie is an Overhead Door Corporation brand, so the two are sister brands. Overhead Door makes garage doors and openers, and its openers use Genie-type remotes. That is why an Intellicode remote usually pairs with either one. Opener parts are not always the same between the two, so we still match them to the model label.
