Quick answer

Overhead Door is a manufacturer of garage doors and openers, and Genie is its sister brand, so Overhead Door openers use Genie-type remotes. Its steel sectional doors turn up on San Diego homes of every age. We repair both: springs, cables, rollers and hinges on the doors, and carriages, circuit boards, sensors and CodeDodger remotes on the openers.

What we see on these

  • Steel sectional doors with a broken torsion spring or a frayed lift cable
  • Worn rollers and cracked hinges on doors that have cycled for decades
  • Overhead Door openers that need a carriage, a circuit board or sensors, with CodeDodger remotes to pair
  • Damaged sections that have to match the model and panel design, measured and quoted

Where we see Overhead Door doors and openers in San Diego

Overhead Door steel sectional doors turn up on homes of many ages across the county, from the tracts of Scripps Ranch and Carmel Mountain Ranch to Oceanside. Plenty are still running on their original sections and track, with springs, cables and rollers replaced along the way.

Because Overhead Door and Genie are sister brands, the opener above one of these doors may be an Overhead Door or a Genie unit. Either way it takes Genie-type remotes.

A door that has run for decades has usually outlived at least one set of springs, so on these doors a broken spring is the repair to expect first.

How to identify an Overhead Door door or opener

First, the name. "Overhead Door" is a company name, the maker behind the brand, not a generic word for any garage door that lifts up. Plenty of people search "overhead door repair" when they mean any garage door, and that is fine: we repair all of them. We are an independent repair company, not affiliated with Overhead Door Corporation, Genie or any other manufacturer.

To identify the door, look for the maker's sticker on the inside: on an end stile, the vertical edge of a section next to the track, or on the inside face of a section.

To identify the opener, read the label on the motor head. Overhead Door calls its rolling-code system CodeDodger, and its openers take Genie-type remotes, so a Genie-style remote clipped to the car visor is a good hint.

What wears out on Overhead Door doors and openers

On the door: torsion springs reach the end of their cycle rating and break, usually with a loud bang and a gap of about two inches in the coil. Lift cables fray near the bottom brackets, rollers wear flat, and hinges crack. See loud bang or broken spring and cable snapped or off the drum.

On the opener: the carriage wears, circuit boards fail after surges, and sensors drift out of line. If the opener is a screw drive, its grease dries out too.

Safety first. Never adjust, unwind or remove a spring, a cable, a cable drum or a bottom bracket; they hold enough tension to cause serious injury. Do not run the opener with a broken spring or a snapped cable, and keep everyone out from under a door that is crooked or jammed.

Overhead Door parts and what we carry

Most of the hardware on an Overhead Door steel sectional is standard. Torsion springs are sized by wire size, inside diameter and length to the weight and height of the door. Cables and drums follow the door height. Rollers, numbered hinges and bottom brackets come in common sizes, and we carry them on the truck.

The bottom seal has to match the retainer on the bottom section, so we check the profile before fitting one. Damaged sections must match the model, color and panel design; they are measured and quoted, as explained on our panel and section replacement page.

For the openers we carry Genie-type remotes and keypads that pair with CodeDodger units, safety sensors and common carriages, and we order circuit boards by model.

Repair or replace an Overhead Door

A sound steel door with a broken spring, a frayed cable or worn rollers is a repair, usually done in one visit. A door with several crushed or rusted-through sections, or one whose sections can no longer be matched, is a candidate for replacement.

We are not a licensed contractor. Garage door repairs under $1,000 in labor and materials do not require a California contractor license (Business and Professions Code section 7048), and we stay inside that line. A new garage door is a job for a licensed contractor, and we say so.

For the opener, the same logic applies as on a Genie: repair a carriage, sensors or a remote, and consider replacing an old unit with a failed board or no battery backup. See our repair or replace guide.

Overhead Door repair across San Diego

We work on Overhead Door doors and openers across the county, from Eastlake and Otay Ranch in the South Bay to the coast in Coronado, where salt air rusts springs, cables and track faster than inland.

On every door visit we check the springs, cables, drums, rollers and hinges, lubricate the moving parts and confirm the door balances with the opener disconnected. If the door is due for more than the repair you called about, a tune-up and safety inspection covers the rest in the same trip.

Overhead Door: common questions

Is "overhead door" just another name for a garage door?

People often use it that way, but Overhead Door is a company that makes garage doors and openers, and Genie is its sister brand. If you searched "overhead door repair" for any garage door, we can still help: we repair residential garage doors and openers of every common brand in San Diego County.

What remote works with an Overhead Door opener?

An Intellicode remote or keypad from the Genie family usually pairs, because Overhead Door openers use the same type of rolling code. Universal remotes that list Genie or Overhead Door work too once they are set to that family. LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman remotes will not. Read the label on the motor head or send us a photo, and we will bring a remote and keypad that match.

Can you replace a spring on an Overhead Door garage door?

Yes. Torsion springs are sized to the weight and height of the door, not the brand, so we match the wire size, inside diameter and length and balance the door afterward. Many double doors run two springs, and when one breaks we usually suggest replacing both, since they have done the same number of cycles.

Can you replace a damaged section on an Overhead Door door?

Often, if a matching section is still available. Sections are ordered to match the make, model, color and panel design, so we measure the door, read the sticker and quote the section before ordering. If a match is not available or several sections are damaged, replacing the door may make more sense, and that is a job for a licensed contractor.

What is CodeDodger on an Overhead Door opener?

CodeDodger is Overhead Door's name for the rolling-code system in its openers. Each press of the remote sends a new code, so a recorded signal cannot simply be replayed. It is the counterpart of Genie's Intellicode, and Genie's own remote compatibility chart lists CodeDodger openers from 1995 on, which is why a Genie-type remote usually pairs with an Overhead Door opener.
