A dented or cracked section on a steel sectional door can often be replaced on its own, as long as the maker still offers a section that matches your door's model, color and panel design. We identify the door, measure it, quote it, order the section, then swap it in and rebalance the door. When several sections are damaged, a new door is the honest answer.
What you get
- Your door identified by make, model, color and panel design, with the matching section confirmed before it is ordered
- A measured quote, since every section is made to match the door it goes into
- The damaged section swapped, hinges and rollers moved over or renewed, and the door rebalanced
- Struts added across sections that bow, and a reinforcement bracket where the opener pulls
- A straight answer when a new door makes more sense, with a referral to a licensed contractor
When one section can be replaced
A sectional door is usually four or five horizontal sections hinged together. Each one can come out and be replaced on its own, so a bumper dent or a cracked panel does not automatically mean a new door.
Section replacement makes sense when:
- The damage is limited to one section, sometimes two.
- The maker still offers your model in your color and panel design. Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton are the common steel doors here.
- The rest of the door is straight, the springs and cables are sound, and the tracks are not bent.
The bottom section takes most of the hits: bumpers, lawn mowers, and the car that rolls forward one foot too far. If that just happened, our guide to a garage door hit by a car covers what to do first.
Matching your door: make, model, color and design
A new section has to match its neighbors in height, thickness, panel pattern, color and the profile of the joints between sections. A close guess leaves a section that does not seal or does not line up.
So we identify the door first. Many doors carry a maker's label on the inside, and when it is gone the panel design, thickness and insulation narrow it down. We measure section height and door width and photograph the joint profile.
Two honest limits. Colors fade, so a new white section can look brighter than a door that has had twenty summers of sun. And when a model is discontinued, no matching section exists. Then the choice is painting the door so a near match blends in, or a new door.

How a section swap goes
- Identify and measure. Photos first, then a visit to measure and confirm the model.
- Quote and order. You get a measured quote. Once you approve it, the section is ordered to match.
- Swap. With the door closed and the spring tension released, we take out the damaged section, move the hinges, rollers and any strut to the new one, or renew worn ones, and set it in place.
- Rewind and balance. The springs are wound back, the door is balanced, and the opener settings and safety reverse are tested.
Safety: the bottom section carries the bottom brackets, which hold the lift cables under full spring tension. Never unbolt them, and never try to take out a section with the springs wound. This is not a do-it-yourself job.
Cracks, bows and struts
Not every damaged section needs replacing. Some problems are fixed in place.
- Bowed sections. Wide doors can sag in the middle over the years. Struts are steel stiffeners bolted across the inside of a section, and a 16 ft door usually has one or two across the top section. A strut added to a section that has started to bow stops the sag before it cracks.
- Cracks at the opener bracket. The opener pulls on the top section at one point, and thin steel can crack around it. An operator reinforcement bracket and a strut spread that load.
- Torn hinges. Hinges that crack or pull loose are covered on the rollers and hinges page.
Split or rotted panels on wood doors are a different job, covered on the wood and custom doors page.
Section or a new door: how we call it
We would rather fix the door you have. But a section is a special order, and past a certain point the money is better spent on a new door.
- Replace the section when one section is damaged, the model is still made and the rest of the door is sound.
- Look at a new door when two or more sections are damaged, the model is discontinued, the steel is rusting through, or the springs, cables and rollers are all due at the same time.
We are not a licensed contractor. Garage door repairs under $1,000 in labor and materials do not require a California contractor license (Business and Professions Code section 7048), and we stay inside that line. A new garage door is a job for a licensed contractor, and we say so. If a section job would cross that line, we tell you before anything is ordered. Our repair or replace guide lays out the trade-off.
Panel repair across San Diego County
Section replacement works well on the steel sectionals of 1990s and 2000s tract homes, from Eastlake and Otay Ranch to the newer streets of San Marcos. Those are often standard builder models, which improves the odds that a matching section is still made.
Older neighborhoods are a different story. In Clairemont and other 1950s and 1960s tracts, the door may be a replacement from any decade, and older steel models are often discontinued. Some homes still have one-piece tilt-up doors, which have no sections at all.
Many HOA communities, San Elijo Hills among them, set rules on door color and style. Send us yours and we check the match against them before ordering.
Panel and Section Replacement: common questions
Can you replace just one panel on a garage door?
Yes, on a steel sectional door, as long as the maker still offers a section that matches your door's model, color and panel design. The damaged section comes out, a new one goes in, and the door is rebalanced. If the model is discontinued or several sections are damaged, a new door is usually the better buy.
What if my garage door model is discontinued?
Then no exact match exists, and the choice is between a near match and a new door. A section close in height, thickness and joint profile can go in, and painting the whole door helps it blend, as long as it seals and lines up with its neighbors. When nothing comes close, or several sections are damaged, a new door is the honest answer, and that is a job for a licensed contractor.
Can a dented garage door panel be repaired instead of replaced?
Small dents in a steel section are usually cosmetic and can be left alone. A dent that creases the section, bends a hinge point or stops the door from rolling cleanly weakens the door, and that section gets replaced. Bowing and sag across a wide door can often be fixed in place by adding a strut.
How long does garage door section replacement take?
There are two steps. The section has to be ordered to match your door, and the wait depends on the maker and the model. Once it arrives, the swap itself is one visit: spring tension released, section replaced, hardware moved over, springs wound back, and the door balanced and tested.
Is it safe to replace a garage door section myself?
No. The bottom section carries the bottom brackets, which hold the lift cables under full spring tension, and the springs have to be unwound before any section comes out. Unbolting a bracket or a hinge with the springs wound can send parts flying and drop the door. Leave the springs, cables and brackets to a technician.
