Garage Door Remote or Keypad Not Working in San Diego

Do this now: If the door hangs crooked or a spring looks broken, do not run it. Otherwise press the wall button: if the door runs, try a fresh remote battery and turn off the lock on the wall console. Then call, or text us a photo of the opener label.

If the wall button still runs the door but the remote or keypad does not, the opener is fine and the signal is not getting through.

Quick answer

If the wall button still runs the door but the remote or keypad does not, the opener is fine and the signal is not getting through. Safety: a crooked door or a broken spring is not a remote problem, so leave it. Battery: fit a fresh one. Lock: turn off the wall console lock. Bulbs: new LED bulbs in the opener can cut range.

Likely causes

  • A dead or weak remote or keypad battery
  • The lock or vacation setting switched on at the wall console
  • Short range from LED bulb interference or a damaged antenna wire
  • Remote memory erased by a power surge or a held learn button
  • An older remote that cannot pair with a newer opener

What you are seeing

You press the remote and nothing happens, or it works only when you are right in front of the door. The keypad beeps and lights up but the door stays shut. One remote works and the other does not, or the button in the car quit after a battery change.

The first question: does the wall button inside the garage still run the door? If it does, the opener and the door are fine, and the problem is the remote, the signal or the opener's memory. If the wall button does nothing either, start with garage door will not open.

If the remote opens the door but it will not close, the remote is fine. The safety sensors stop a close, not an open; see sensor light blinking.

What usually causes it

  • Battery. The usual suspect. A weak battery often shows up first as shorter range.
  • Lock mode. Many wall consoles have a lock or vacation setting that shuts out every remote and keypad while the wall button still works. On Chamberlain-made openers the main light can flash twice when it is on; see opener light blinking.
  • Range and interference. LED bulbs in the opener's light sockets can give off radio noise that cuts range to a few feet, and so can an antenna wire that is cut or tucked against the ceiling.
  • Erased memory. A power surge, or someone holding the learn button too long, can clear every remote at once on many openers.
  • Wrong technology. A new LiftMaster built from 2025 runs Security+ 3.0 and takes only 3.0 remotes, and a Genie with Intellicode needs remotes built for that system.

What you can safely check in two minutes

Never run the opener to test a remote if the door hangs crooked or a spring looks broken; that is not a remote problem.

  1. Wall button. Press it. If the door runs, the opener has power and the trouble is on the remote side. If nothing happens, check the outlet and the breaker.
  2. Lock. Look for a lock button, switch or blinking light on the wall console, and turn the lock off.
  3. Battery. Put a fresh battery of the same type in the remote or keypad. A keypad that lights but does nothing may need its code set again; our keypad code guide covers the steps.
  4. Springs and cables. A quick look from the floor. If one is broken, the remote is not the problem.
  5. Timing. Note whether it started after new LED bulbs, a power outage or a new opener.

Which repair fixes it

  • Lost programming, or a remote you cannot account for: memory cleared and the remotes, keypad and car buttons you keep relearned, our remote, keypad and HomeLink service.
  • Worn-out remotes or a keypad that will not pair: new ones matched to the opener, in the same visit.
  • Short range from LED bulbs: bulbs sold as compatible with garage door openers.
  • A damaged antenna or a failing receiver on the logic board: opener repair.
  • An older car button and a newer rolling-code opener: some pair only through a compatibility adapter.

When a repair stops making sense

Remotes are inexpensive, so this decision is really about the opener behind them.

  • A fixed-code opener. Openers built before rolling codes are set with a row of small switches to one code that never changes, and any remote set to the same pattern will open the door. Replace the opener rather than buying remotes for it.
  • A dead receiver on an old logic board. On an older unit, a new board is a large share of the cost of a new opener.
  • A drawer of mismatched remotes from several past openers. Starting over with one system is usually simpler.

A new opener comes with matching remotes and, in California, battery backup. See opener replacement.

Across San Diego

In Rancho Bernardo, much of it built from the 1960s through the 1980s, an early opener with code switches may still hang in an original garage. That is a replacement problem, not a remote problem.

Rentals change hands often in Vista, and near Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College in San Marcos. A tenant change is the moment to wipe the opener's memory and set fresh remotes and keypad codes, so nobody from the last lease can still open the garage. Our landlord and property manager page covers turnover visits.

Remote or Keypad Not Working: common questions

Why did my garage door remote suddenly stop working?

Start with the battery, even if it is not very old. If a fresh battery does not help, check the wall console for a lock or vacation setting that has been switched on. If the remote works only up close, LED bulbs in the opener or a damaged antenna wire are likely. If every remote quit at once, the opener's memory may have been erased.

Why does my garage door remote only work up close?

Short range usually comes from a weak battery, LED bulbs in the opener that give off radio interference, or an antenna wire on the motor head that is cut or tucked up instead of hanging free. A fresh battery is the first fix. If range is still short, a technician can test with the bulbs out and check the antenna and receiver.

Why does my garage door remote open the door but not close it?

Because the safety sensors only stop a close. If the remote opens the door but it will not come down, or comes down and reverses, one of the photo eyes near the floor is blocked, out of line or blinded by low sun. Look at the sensor lights: a blinking or dark one is the cause, not the remote. Clear the beam, wipe both lenses and try again.

How do I know if the lock button on my garage door opener is on?

When the lock or vacation setting is on, remotes and the outside keypad stop working while the wall button still runs the door. Many wall consoles blink a light or show a lock symbol when locked, and on LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers the main light can flash twice. Pressing or holding the lock button again usually turns it off. The opener manual has the exact steps.

Why is my garage door keypad not working?

Start with the keypad battery, usually under the cover or a slide-down lid. Then check the lock button on the wall console, which shuts out keypads along with remotes. If the keypad lights and beeps but the door does not move, it has likely lost its pairing with the opener or its code and needs to be programmed again. A cracked or water-damaged keypad is replaced.
