Quick answer

Clopay steel sectional doors hang on garages in San Diego County tracts built from the 1990s on. When one stops working, the cause is usually a broken torsion spring, a frayed lift cable, worn rollers or a bowed top section, not the door itself. We replace the spring hardware, cables, rollers and hinges, rebalance the door, and measure and quote matching sections.

What we see on these

  • Torsion springs at the end of their cycle rating, sometimes a single spring carrying a full two-car door
  • Top sections bowed where the opener pulls, on 16 ft doors with a loose or missing strut
  • Rollers worn flat and hinges cracked or loose along the section joints
  • Bottom sections dented by a car bumper, measured for a matching replacement
  • Flattened bottom seals letting in leaves, water and a line of daylight

Where we see Clopay doors in San Diego

Clopay is one of the common steel sectional door makers, and its doors hang on garages in every corner of San Diego County. Builders fitted steel sectionals like these to tract homes from the 1990s through the 2020s, in single, two-car and three-car widths.

You will find them on the tract streets of Eastlake and Otay Ranch, in 4S Ranch and across San Marcos, and a door from those years may still be running on its original springs, rollers and cables. A door that has opened twice a day for twenty years has done its job. The sections are usually fine. The moving parts are simply worn out.

How to identify a Clopay door

Stand inside the garage with the door closed and check the inside face of each section for a sticker or stamp with the maker's name. Sun, paint and years of cleaning remove a lot of labels, so a missing one is normal.

The door itself gives clues. Clopay steel doors come insulated and non-insulated. Knock on a section: a hollow, tinny ring means a single layer of steel, while a dull thud means foam behind the skin. Insulated doors weigh more, which matters when we size springs.

Panel designs range from short and long raised panels to flush faces and carriage-style overlays, often with windows in the top section. Still not sure? Send a photo of the inside of the door, springs included, through the quote form.

What wears out on a Clopay door

Torsion springs. Most of these doors run one or two torsion springs on a shaft above the opening. Standard residential springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles, roughly seven years for a door that opens and closes four times a day. A broken one leaves a two-inch gap in the coil, usually after a loud bang. See broken spring.

Rollers and hinges. Original rollers wear flat, lose their bearings and start to grind. Hinges crack, or their screws work loose in the end stiles.

Top section. On a 16 ft door the opener pulls on the center of the top section. Without a strut, or with a loose one, it bows and can crease.

Never loosen, wind or remove a spring, cable, cable drum or bottom bracket yourself, never run the opener with a broken spring or cable, and keep everyone out from under a door that hangs crooked.

Parts and what we carry

Springs are matched to the door, not the brand. We measure the old spring's wire size, inside diameter and length, check the door's weight and height, and fit springs that balance it. The truck carries torsion springs in common residential sizes, winding cones, center bearing plates, cable drums and lift cables.

Also on board: nylon ball-bearing rollers, hinges in the common numbered sizes, struts, bottom brackets, and bottom seals with retainers. Nylon rollers run quieter than steel, which helps when a bedroom sits over the garage.

Sections are the exception. A replacement has to match the model, color and panel design, so we measure it, quote it and order it; see panel and section replacement. We are an independent repair company with no affiliation to Clopay or any other manufacturer, so we fit the part that suits your door.

Repair or replace a Clopay door

For most Clopay doors the answer is repair. The steel sections usually outlast the hardware by years, so renewing the moving parts brings the door back.

  • Repair when the sections are straight and solid and the problem is a spring, cable, roller, hinge, seal or a bowed top section that a strut can support.
  • Replace one section when a single panel is dented and a match is still made in your design and color. That is a measured quote.
  • Consider a new door when several sections are damaged, rust has come through the bottom section, or no matching section exists.

A new garage door is a job for a licensed contractor, and we say so. The repair or replace guide walks through the decision in more depth.

Clopay door repair across San Diego

The doors are the same across the county, but the conditions are not. Near the coast in Carlsbad, Oceanside and Imperial Beach, salt air rusts springs, cables and bottom brackets, so those get a close look on every visit. Inland in Santee, Escondido and Poway, summer heat dries out bottom seals until they crack and let in dust.

Every visit follows the same order: find the failed part, replace it, balance the door, lubricate the moving parts and test the opener's safety reverse. Standard spring, cable and roller work is listed on our pricing page, and a photo sent through the quote form gets you a firm price before we drive out.

Clopay: common questions

How do I know if my garage door is a Clopay?

Check the inside face of each door section for a sticker or stamp with the Clopay name. Labels often fade or get painted over, so a missing one is common. A photo of the inside of the door, with the springs and hardware in the frame, is usually enough for us to tell you what you have and which parts it takes.

Can you replace a cracked window on a Clopay garage door?

Usually. Most windows on steel sectional doors are inserts held in the section by a two-part frame, so the glass or acrylic can be replaced without replacing the whole section. The insert has to match the door's window size and style, so we measure it and quote it, then order it while your design is still made. A window cracked by an impact is worth a check of the section around it.

Can you replace just one section of a Clopay door?

Often, yes. A replacement section has to match the door's model, color and panel design, so we measure the door and quote the section before ordering it. If that design has been discontinued, an exact match may not exist and a new door can make more sense. A new garage door is a job for a licensed contractor, and we say so.

Do you repair Clopay Coachman and other carriage-style doors?

Yes. Coachman doors are insulated steel with composite overlays that give a carriage-house look, and they open overhead like any sectional, so the springs, cables, rollers and hinges are the parts we replace. The overlays and insulation add weight, so we size the springs to the actual door rather than copying the old ones. Damaged sections and overlays are measured and quoted.

Do you repair Clopay doors bought at Home Depot?

Yes. A Clopay door bought from a home improvement store is the same kind of steel sectional we see from builders, and it takes the same standard springs, cables, rollers and hinges. Where the door came from does not change the repair. If the door is new enough to be under warranty, check that paperwork first, then send us a photo of the problem.

The FAQ page has more answers. Not sure which part failed? Send a photo and we will name it.
